Hybrid Electric Vehicle Development and Testing

Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV and PHEV)

HEVs are vehicles with a combination of an internal combustion engine (ICE) and an e-motor. A full HEV depends on regenerative technologies (like braking) and ICE charging to power its e-motor. A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) acquires most of its energy from an external source and is equipped with a bigger battery. HEVs combine the benefits of a conventional vehicle’s power and range with electrification’s low emissions advantage. However, a hybrid vehicle contains two separate propulsion systems that require development and testing, as well as a battery subsystem that must be considered. This is a challenge for vehicle developers and manufacturers who must deliver a vehicle program on schedule and within budget—despite more testing, additional technologies, and complex integration.

With over 75 years of experience in lab and on-the-road emissions testing, and expertise in energy management technologies, HORIBA offers its partners complete solutions for all aspects of HEV vehicle development and testing. In addition to a comprehensive range of flexible, robust emissions analyzers and measurement equipment, HORIBA offers a wide range of vehicle test stands from component level (engine, e-motor, powertrain) to full vehicle (VULCAN chassis dynamometer, TITAN Powertrain test stands with vehicle lift system option (VSL).

HORIBA offers experience in battery testing solutions from the cell to pack level for all types of vehicle architectures and requirements. Mild hybrids rely on 48V on-board power supplies, which can be tested using HORIBA FuelCon’s advanced battery emulation systems. The additional software, electronics, and hardware necessary to support HEVs must be safely and efficiently integrated into vehicle architectures. HORIBA’s highly experienced Functional Safety Team helps ensure this process is done correctly and in accordance with ISO 26262.

The robust STARS automation system, including STARS Enterprise lab automation, is built on an open and adaptable architecture designed for customization. Together with HORIBA FuelCon’s TestWork automation solution, designed specifically for battery testing, customers benefit from a seamless user experience.
